Getting students off the couch when at home

Covid-19 has made home school a common exercise. At Krapfoss elementary, Wittario is used to get students on their feet.

We have had several home school periods during the last year. Sometimes we are all instructed to work from home, sometimes an entire class or a student is placed in quarantene, says teacher Bjørn Christensen at Krapfoss Elementary School.

Teachers such as Bjørn need to adapt the way they teach. Luckily there are many digital tools that can make the digital school a reality.

However, there are some things that most digital tools cannot help with. Students are cooped up indoors and the web conferenses and video chats with friends are not ample substitutes for social interaction. In addition, kids need to move about to have the focus and energy needed for learning, says Christensen.
Outdoor games

6th grade at Krapfoss created their own questions and tasks and created their own game. On the last day of school 2020, the entire class had school from home. Still, the class had an outdoor activity - participating in their own collectively created game.

The students went alone or in small groups down to the school area and played the game. The fact that the game was created by themselves was an extra motivating factor. It is much easier to keep social distancing when outdoors, and this is why the social aspect of playing Wittario is so important, says Christensen.
