Historic Church Trail on Hvaler with Digital Game

The Hvaler Cultural Preservation Association has designed the path on Kirkøy. The assignment was to point out a path that follows an old road, often used for a special purpose. The Cultural Preservation Association chose the old church road that people from the western islands used to get to Hvaler Church.

The purpose of the game is to show which way people from the western Hvaler Islands had to take to get to Hvaler Church - and for many this was almost a day's journey. So they very often had to stay overnight, and they did so at a guesthouse right nearby, says Gunn Hedberg, board member of the Hvaler Cultural Preservation Association.

The guesthouse that Gunn mentions is one of the stops in the game. On the path, the students are given pictures, texts, videos and audio files that give them more information about the place they are standing, the history behind it and what happened at the particular place.

- This was better than regular school!, says one of the students

It's fun to do fun things that are still educational

The game is originally a 7 km long game, but the students got a taste of about 2 km, and the students got started very quickly. They had a good walking speed throughout the game and rushed through the posts at the same time as they solved tasks and discussed in between. The students really appreciated a varied school day where they are allowed to be active.
