Background and challenge

Fredrikstad Municipality marked World Mental Health Day with a city walk for nearly 1,000 tenth-grade pupils from both public and private schools. This year’s message was “Trust is preparedness”, alongside the idea that every action counts.

The aim was to introduce young people to the people, organisations and services that can help with challenges large and small related to mental health. More than 20 providers took part to show both what they offer and where they are located.

How

Aktive Fredrikstad

solved the challenge

Fredrikstad Municipality used Wittario to connect a physical city walk with digital questions and tasks. Schools, teachers and stations received information in advance so that many groups of pupils could move through the city.

✓
Schools received information and QR codes before the event. Teachers at each school received envelopes containing their school’s QR codes so groups could get started.
✓
Pupils were split into groups and sent out in waves and in different directions. A shorter programme at Stortorvet helped organisers manage the flow of pupils.
✓
The stations received an overview of their place in the sequence. Along the route, pupils answered questions and completed Wittario tasks at local services and organisations.

From challenge to solution

Advance preparation was important for a city walk involving nearly 1,000 pupils. Information and QR codes were sent to the schools beforehand, and teachers received envelopes with their codes.

By sending groups out in waves and in different directions, and keeping the programme at Stortorvet short, organisers maintained control over the flow of pupils. Each station also knew its position in the route sequence.

Questions and activities in Wittario guided pupils between services. There they met people and organisations working with young people in Fredrikstad.

Why does this work?

The digital activity gave pupils specific tasks to complete as they moved around the city. According to Odd Espen Høili, they learned both what the services offer and where to find them.

Groups, QR codes and different starting directions helped spread the large number of participants. Pupils from public and private schools also had the chance to meet across school boundaries.

Results and testimonials

Nearly 1,000 tenth-grade pupils took part, and more than 20 providers made their services and activities for young people visible. Høili says the feedback so far has been unanimously positive.

“

The feedback so far has been unanimously positive! Some wanted more multiple-choice tasks, but the pupils were very happy with the activities. And, above all, they got a good dose of active learning!

Pupils became more familiar with what the services offer and where they are. Some wanted to spend more time exploring the content at certain stations, and some asked for more multiple-choice tasks. Even so, pupils were very happy with the activities and experienced active learning.
