From values to action – Safety Day with Wittario

For Safety Day, VPK Packaging used a tailored team activity that engaged around 250 employees in collaboration and reflection. It worked so well that the company repeated it the following year, with new questions and a new focus.

Talking about our values, wellbeing and work environment can often feel a bit ‘fluffy’ and difficult. Using a Wittario game in this way sparked many good discussions and a lot of engagement around the tables.

Background and challenge

VPK Packaging is a manufacturing business in Halden with around 250 employees and is part of a larger international group. Safety and prevention are central to its culture. Zero accidents is more than a target, and the company regularly practises emergency procedures.

Safety Day aimed to build knowledge, cooperation between departments and a safer physical and psychosocial workplace. VPK also wanted a more active way to talk about values, wellbeing and the work environment.

These topics can feel abstract. VPK wanted employees to participate, share perspectives and connect its values to concrete situations in their working day.

How

VPK Packaging

solved the challenge

VPK Packaging created its own videos and other content for a tailored Wittario activity featuring questions, reflection and creative tasks. Employees from different departments worked together in teams on iPads.

✓
The first Safety Day activity, in October 2024, focused on values. Teams watched short videos made by VPK, answered questions about its values, discussed wellbeing and the work environment, and solved tasks together.
✓
Teams competed and, among other things, took a team photo featuring something green, the colour of the company logo. The simple iPad format made room for conversations across departments.
✓
In 2025, VPK used the same format again with new questions, tasks and content about physical and mental health. The activity lasted around 20 minutes as part of a wider Safety Day.
✓
The wider day also included emergency and evacuation drills, firefighting and first aid. The same format can be refreshed with new videos and questions on safety, emergency preparedness, HSE, wellbeing and culture.

From challenge to solution

For its first Safety Day in October 2024, VPK recorded its own videos on mobile phones to show what its values mean in practice. The videos and other company content became part of a tailored Wittario activity.

Employees from different departments gathered in teams in the canteen. Each team used an iPad to watch the videos, answer questions, discuss wellbeing and the work environment, and complete creative tasks. The competition brought energy and helped colleagues get to know one another.

The following year, VPK chose the same practical format with new questions, tasks and content. This time, physical and mental health were the main themes. The introductory video invited employees to discuss how they could prevent sickness absence and improve the working day together.

Why does this work?

Instead of listening to a presentation about values, teams discussed what they mean in practice. They shared experiences, found concrete examples and agreed on answers together.

The game format made it easier to take part and gave more employees a chance to contribute. Colleagues could learn from one another across departments.

The technology was meant to support the content and collaboration. The activity was straightforward to run on iPad, and the format could be filled with new topics the next year.
