800 tenth-grade pupils explored mental health and local services

On World Mental Health Day 2025, around 800 tenth-grade pupils took part in Aktive Fredrikstad’s walking game. With Wittario, they discovered local youth services, completed tasks and talked together along the way.

We want to show young people that there are many good services and meeting places for them in Fredrikstad. By combining this with activity and a focus on mental health, we hope to create both learning and positive experiences.

Background and challenge

World Mental Health Day is marked on 10 October. In 2025, Aktive Fredrikstad wanted to make the theme of mental preparedness tangible for the municipality’s tenth-grade pupils through activity, learning and conversation.

The aim was for young people to discover places where they can take part in activities, meet others or find someone to talk to. Municipal services and local organisations contributed information about what they offer.

With around 800 pupils from seven schools, the programme needed to spread participants across the stops. It also had to work for schools and pupils who could not take part in the town-centre route.

How

Aktive Fredrikstad

solved the challenge

Aktive Fredrikstad developed two digital routes in the town centre and a distance-based activity for schools unable to travel there. Pupils worked in small teams with tasks and conversation cards.

Teams of three to four pupils opened Wittario using a QR code and followed the map between stops in central Fredrikstad.
At local youth services, pupils received information about services and meeting places and completed tasks related to what was available.
Conversation cards between stops gave teams questions to discuss as they walked.
A distance-based version with the same theme allowed schools to participate at their own premises, outdoors or indoors.

From challenge to solution

Aktive Fredrikstad and Wittario created two routes through central Fredrikstad. Pupils started with a QR code, worked together in teams and used the map to find the next stop.

20 partners shared images and brief information about activities, meeting places and support services. At the stops, pupils received the content on their phones and completed tasks related to the location or mental health.

Pupils at schools that did not travel into the centre could use a distance-based activity covering the same themes. It could be completed outdoors or indoors and adapted to different needs.

Why does this work?

Pupils had to navigate, read, discuss and answer for themselves. Receiving information at an actual service location also showed them where they could seek help or get involved in their own neighbourhood.

The conversation cards gave groups a starting point for discussing mental health between stops. Small teams made it possible to listen to one another and complete the tasks together.

Two routes and two groups of participants spread attendance across the town centre. The alternative activity allowed more schools to work on the same theme without following the geographical stops.

By combining this with activity and a focus on mental health, we hope to create both learning and positive experiences.
