Diplom-Is brought its organisation together with a digital Advent calendar

A digital Advent calendar gave around 300 Diplom-Is employees across Norway a shared experience in the run-up to Christmas. It combined festive spirit, competitions and glimpses into colleagues’ working days.

It was great fun to see and hear how engaged the employees were. We chose winning photos and handed out prizes to employees. We got lots of Christmas cheer, along with many lovely photos and responses in return!

Why

Diplom-Is

chose Wittario

Easy participation straight from a mobile phone

Short activities that fit into a busy working day

A shared activity for employees across the country

A way to combine culture building, learning and competition

Two-way communication through photos, video and free-text responses

Background and challenge

Diplom-Is is one of Norway’s best-known brands. Behind ice cream classics such as Krone-Is, Pin-Up, Lollipop and Sandwich are around 300 employees in a range of roles and disciplines.

With its headquarters and ice cream factory outside Oslo and employees spread across the country, Diplom-Is wanted an activity that could bring the organisation together during the busy run-up to Christmas.

The goal was more than festive cheer. The Advent calendar was also meant to strengthen internal culture, highlight different parts of the business and give employees an easy way to share experiences and learn more about one another’s work.

How

Diplom-Is

solved the challenge

Working with Wittario, Diplom-Is developed a digital Advent calendar published on its intranet. Every day until Christmas Eve, a new Wittario activity opened for employees to complete on their phones.

Tasks linked to Diplom-Is and its values, plus sharing experiences from different areas of the business

From challenge to solution

The activities varied in content and length. On some days there was just one task, such as taking a photo of your Christmas sweater on Ugly Christmas Sweater Day. Other days featured a longer Christmas quiz or questions from production that tested knowledge of the business.

The activities were tailored to Diplom-Is, its values and the Christmas season. They took only a few minutes to complete, making them a short break in the working day regardless of location, role or technical experience.

From Advent calendar to a place for sharing: A key aim was to create more than one-way communication. Tasks inviting photos, text and other contributions let employees help shape the content. Several activities highlighted different disciplines and working days at Diplom-Is. Employees shared experiences, photos and insights from their part of the business, helping colleagues understand how other departments work. People who did not usually work closely together gained insight into one another’s roles, tasks and contributions to the whole.

Why does this work?

The Advent calendar demanded little time or technical skill. Activities were short, mobile-friendly and easy to open from the intranet.

Employees were invited to contribute, too. Instead of just reading information, they answered questions, shared photos, reflected and entered competitions.

That combination made the calendar both a communication channel and a shared activity. Diplom-Is could reach the whole organisation with content while receiving photos, comments and experiences from employees in return.

Results and testimonials

Throughout December, Diplom-Is received many responses and photos from employees. Their contributions made engagement visible and gave the business content to share internally.
