When all of Sarpsborg became a classroom for mental health!

Fellesverket took young people on a digital trail through the city centre. Teamwork, movement and reflection tasks made mental health easier to talk about.

The aim of the day is to create an enjoyable but also educational activity for young people, focusing on mental health and informing them about the different services available to them.

Why

Fellesverket Sarpsborg (Røde Kors)

chose Wittario

Conversation cards and information tasks that open up discussions about mental health

Teamwork and movement to get young people involved

A game-based platform that appeals to young people

An interactive event bringing many organisations together

Greater visibility for youth support services in Sarpsborg

Background and challenge

World Mental Health Day is about encouraging openness, connection and meaningful conversations. Fellesverket Sarpsborg wanted to mark the day in a way that would resonate with young people on their own terms.

Rather than keeping students indoors for a lesson on the subject, the organisers wanted to take them out into the city. Through activity and teamwork, the young people would learn about both the year’s campaign theme and the many services available to them in Sarpsborg.

The event was developed by Fellesverket Sarpsborg, Røde Kors, Kirkens Bymisjon, iSarpsborg, Wittario and several local partners, including Sarpsborg kommune, Ungdommens Kulturhus, Sarpsborg bibliotek, Helsestasjon for ungdom, Dumpa Aktivitetspark and Sarpsborg kino. Around 650 lower and upper secondary students took part.

How

Fellesverket Sarpsborg (Røde Kors)

solved the challenge

The solution was a digital city trail created in Wittario. Students walked in groups through central Sarpsborg, visiting different stops. Along the way, they completed tasks, received information about youth support services, visited the venues and met the people behind them. They also discussed questions about mental health.

From challenge to solution

An important part of the concept was that the tasks were about more than finding the right answer. The conversations between the young people as they moved from stop to stop mattered just as much.

The tasks gave students a natural way to talk about friendship, feelings, inclusion and mental health. At the same time, they became familiar with Fellesverket, the library, Ungdommens Kulturhus, Helsestasjon for ungdom and other meeting places in Sarpsborg.

Combining physical activity with reflection made the subjects feel less formal and easier to discuss. The whole city centre became a place for learning.

Why does this work?

Research shows that young people often participate more actively when learning happens through experiences and collaboration rather than traditional instruction.

When students move, solve tasks together and talk along the way, it becomes easier to have meaningful conversations about topics that might otherwise feel difficult.

The digital solution also makes it easy to build activities that can be reused and adapted for new audiences and future campaigns.

Results and testimonials

The event received very positive feedback from both students and teachers.

The response prompted Fellesverket to plan another event using the same concept the following year. The plans were ready, but the project could not go ahead because funding was unavailable.

Competence development over time

The city trail shows how one activity can be used for more than a single event. The concept can be adapted to other themes, age groups and cities. New tasks, local partners and campaigns can be added in Wittario Studio without rebuilding the entire activity. That makes the solution sustainable and scalable for municipalities, schools and voluntary organisations.
