Much of the built environment at Nitedals Krudtværk has disappeared. Nittedal Historielag wanted to make its industrial history visible to new generations, particularly young people, in the places where it unfolded.
Experience from an earlier walking game about Hakadal verk provided a starting point for a new experience in Kruttverksdalen.
Together with Nitedals Krudtværks Venner, Romerike Historielag and Wittario, the historical society developed the walking game “Følg matpakka”.
The forgotten packed lunch gives participants a connecting thread from one stop to the next.
Along the way, they encounter stories about the people, the work and safety at the gunpowder works.
School groups and other visitors can start independently from the information sign at Mostuebrua.
The story and tasks give participants a reason to take a closer look at the places along the route.
The landscape gives history lessons a physical setting, even where the buildings no longer stand.
Pupils told Varingen that the walk was exciting and that they discovered something new about the area.
None of the original buildings from that time are still standing, apart from the gunpowder mill itself, but the walking game teaches you about what happened here, of which we can see very little today.
Mayor Rune Winum opened the game on 8 September 2026. The first participants were 50–60 pupils from Nittedal ungdomsskole.
Bringing about collaboration like this across the local community is something we absolutely must continue.
The pupils highlighted a different kind of school day and new insights into history. The walk is now open to everyone.

After the game about Hakadal verk in 2023, the historical society took its experience forward to Kruttverksdalen. More interactive experiences are planned.
